I grew up admiring them… then they collected my art
How my ocean photography found its way into the home of two living legends—and what it taught me about following the swell of a dream.
When I was younger, I used to watch Laird Hamilton ride the world’s most powerful waves with a kind of fearlessness that didn’t even seem human. He was more than a surfer—he was a symbol of mastery, a pioneer who redefined what was possible in the ocean. And Gabby Reece—his partner in both life and greatness—was a force of her own: strong, grounded, and deeply inspiring in her own right.
To say I looked up to them would be an understatement.
I never imagined that one day, they would be looking at my art… and wanting it in their home.
But that’s exactly what happened.
The Moment That Changed Everything
It all started with a crate.
Months ago, I sent three large-scale ocean photographs to Gabby and Laird’s home in Kauai. I had poured myself into these pieces—each one captured from a moment where light, water, and rhythm aligned perfectly. These weren’t just images; they were feelings. They were the culmination of years chasing light over the Gulf and beyond, often in chaotic, untamed conditions. Sometimes risking gear. Sometimes risking more.
When they received the work, Gabby sent me a message:
“We just opened the pieces and… wow. I’m seriously blown away.”
A few days later, we jumped on a FaceTime. Both Gabby and Laird were standing beside the framed pieces, smiling like kids opening gifts on Christmas morning. I was stunned—not just by their warmth and gratitude, but by the full-circle nature of it all.
That moment reminded me: what you chase, chases you back.
The Testimonial That Meant the World
What happened next still humbles me. Gabby offered to record a short video testimonial about the art—something I didn’t expect but deeply appreciated. In it, she talks about how the pieces made her feel, why they resonated, and the energy they brought into their home.
(You can watch the video at the top of this post.)
What struck me most wasn’t just what she said—but how sincerely she said it. It reminded me why I do what I do. It’s not just about capturing beauty. It’s about moving people. Connecting them to something wild and vast and grounding all at once.
What This Means to Me
As an artist, there are few things more affirming than having someone you admire collect your work—not just because of who they are, but because you know they understand what it takes to pursue something relentlessly.
Gabby and Laird know discipline. They know edge. They know what it means to trust the ocean, your instincts, and your craft. For my work to live in their space means everything. It’s a reminder that the waves you ride in life often start as quiet ripples of intention.
And sometimes… they carry you exactly where you’re meant to go.
Thanks for reading. And thank you, Gabby and Laird, for seeing the ocean through my eyes—and bringing it into your home.
